Valerie studied art and design at Norwich and Farnham and took a post-graduate course at the University of Reading.  For some years she was head of art in a private school in Suffolk.  Since 1999 she has been a professional artist living in Wales. She exhibits, works to commission and is a freelance tutor. Her work is solitary, restful and contemplative, capturing a particular mood rather than a specific location.

I was born and raised in Dolgellau, North Wales and went to school in London attending a Grammar school well known for its Art and Design section. After art O and A levels and preparation of a Foundation course portfolio I moved to Liverpool to study Medicine. I became a Consultant Radiologist at University Hospital Aintree in a Head and Neck cancer unit. I continued with my Art development during my Medical career and have now taken early retirement from the NHS to pursue my Art career further. I have exhibited between 2 and 3 times a year in Liverpool and North Wales for the last 10 years. I love the dark Welsh landscapes of my home town area in South Snowdonia and the bright night time landscapes of the city of Liverpool. My recent work has also included portraits of famous faces from these areas.

Ann studied Zoology and taught in Secondary Schools before becoming a lecturer in Plas Tan Y Bwlch, the Snowdonia National Park Study Centre for 20 years.
She studied Printmaking at Union College, Schenectady U.S.A 1989- 1990 and subsequently used her field nature sketches to produce etchings, monotypes and linoleum prints.

Adventures abroad have led to exhibitions and an art workshop in the Vega Archipelago, Norway situated on the edge of the Arctic Circle. In 2019 She was commissioned to write and illustrate a book of Vega Wild flowers (Vega ‘Wild Wonderful Plants, ‘Ville Vaker Vekster’) for the island’s new World Heritage Centre. In contrast to these mountainous northern islands, she has enjoyed the wide horizons of the Hortobágy National Park a protected World Heritage Site, situated in the Great Hungarian Plain. She exhibited works to promote awareness and interest in the wildlife and heritage of the Hortobágy in 2016. Nearer home – Dolgellau – Ann has produced monotypes and thermofax prints of wooden carved animals in Brithdir Church, a CADW listed church linked to the Arts and Crafts movement.

Ann exhibits with The North Wales Watercolour and Fine Artists Society and has contributed to a book by the founding member of the Society, Margaret Stevens, ’An Introduction to Drawing Flowers’, Quintet Press 1995.

Graddion Ann mewn Swoleg a bu’n athrawes mewn Ysgolion Uwchradd ac yn Ddarlithydd am gyfnod o ugain mlynedd ym Mhlas Tan y Bwlch, Canolfan Astudio Parc Cenedlaethol Eryri. Dilynodd gwrs argraffu yng Ngholeg Union, Schenectday, UDA (1989 – 1990) ac o ganlyniad aeth ymlaen i ddefnyddio brasluniau natur i greu ysgythriadau, monoteipiau a toriadau leino.

Yn sgil ymweliadau â Ynysoedd Vega Norwy, cafodd wahoddiad i arddangos gwaith a chyfle i gynnal gweithdy arlunio ar y brif ynys. Cafodd ei chomisynnu i ysgrifennu ac arlunio llyfr o flodau (Vega ‘Wild Wonderful Plants, ‘Ville Vaker Vekster’) ar gyfer agoriad canolfan newydd Treftadaeth y Byd yr ynysoedd yn 2019. Bu hefyd yn ymwelydd cyson â gwastatir mwyaf Ewrop sef Parc Cenedlaethol yr Hortobágy, Hwngari. Cafodd gyfle i greu ac arddangos cyfres o luniau yn ymwneud â bywyd gwyllt, treftadaeth a phobl yr Hortobágy yn 2016. Mae Ann (o Ddolgellau) wedi creu printiau o anifeiliaid pren Eglwys Brithdir – ar restr CADW megis rhinweddau yn ymweneud â’r mudiad ‘Celf a Chrefft’.

I grew up in coastal Essex and now live in coastal Wales. Always attracted to ballet, plants and animals I started drawing at an early age, and, as well as enjoying gardening and drawing, I sculpted anything miniature from crinoline ladies, with minuscule ringlets and facial details, to bowls of fruit and stylish animals. Furthermore, I designed, and sewed, many animals, dolls, and clothing.

As an illustrator I work in a realistic, photographic style using pencil, pen and ink, watercolours, acrylics, clay, photography and a variety of craft materials, however, I’ve been known to do a few ‘abstracts’. Continue reading “Julia Wilson” →
