Jean will be giving an indepth talk about her many visits to Bardsey – Ynys Enlli and also two amazing historical diaries of past inhabitants. Saturday, 9th February at Harlech Swimming Pool.

Our next workshop will be on Tuesday 5th February 2019 at Llanelltyd Village Hall, starting at 10:30am, and finishing at about 4pm. The cost for members will be £10 and £12 for non-members. The tutor will be Jean Napier.
Many of you will know Jean and be aware of her work as well as her wealth of knowledge and experience in the field of photography. Members who use a camera as an aid to their work should find this Workshop informative and beneficial.
The workshop will have two principal sections:
Part 1: Using a camera to gather subject material.
Part 2: Photographing your work.
Please bring with you some of your finished work and a camera and/or a phone with a camera. Jean would prefer you to bring a camera as this will give her more scope to demonstrate what can be done within photography.
Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch.
N.B. Please stay at end of workshop to help clear-up

Our next workshop will be on Thursday 29th November 2018 at Llanelltyd Village Hall, starting at 10:30am, and finishing at about 4pm. The cost for members will be £10 and £12 for non-members. The tutor will be Ivor Arbuckle.
Participants should bring a range of pencils H – 2B, biro or other ink drawing pen (not dip pen), cartridge Paper min A2 and drawing board, at least 10 sheets (not rolled). Some brushes with black ink and some graphite sticks or charcoal would also be useful. Paper will be available for sale at cost and probably some other bits of drawing materials.
Now for the strange part- bring a cardboard box (large cereal box/photocopy paper box) or bigger – as big as you can manage. The box should closed, have all its flaps masking taped shut and the whole thing painted white to hide any lettering/logos etc. Rectangular boxes are fine, but if anyone has some more unusual shapes (cylinders/cones etc) that would be good.
N.B. If you are unsure of the suitability of any materials you wish to bring please contact Ken (ken.bridges@tiscali.co.uk or 01341 250302)
Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch.

One of our members, Jean Napier, is running a free photography workshop at the Tywyn Cinema at 4.45pm on Sunday 23rd September. No need to book, just turn up. See the poster for more details.
Our next workshop will be on Tuesday 2nd October 2018 at Llanelltyd Village Hall, starting at 10:30am, and finishing at about 4pm. The cost for members will be £10 and £12 for non-members. The tutor will be Huw Lewis-Jones.
The aim of this workshop is to demystify portrait painting and introduce the basic elements of successful portraiture. The participants can choose whether to use palette knife or brush to produce the painting.
Students will need the following equipment:
Students will need an image of a person they wish to paint. I suggest an older person with a good characterful face. I attach some pictures of appropriate faces and you can choose one of these to paint if that suites you.
IMPORTANT: It will allow us to spend the day painting if you arrive having sketched the image as accurately as possible onto your art piece surface. I suggest you grid the art piece surface and grid the image of the portrait to help produce an accurate sketch.
Because of time pressure and limited space ii is probably best to restrict the numbers attending to a maximum of 15. Tea and coffee will be provided but please bring your own packed lunch.

The Peoples Choice award went to Ken Bridges for his painting “Hanging On.”

The theme of this year’s competition was “Sea and Shore.”

First Prize (Kathleen Oakley Trophy): Sue Barnes for O’r Môr (Of the Sea)

Highly Commended: Brenda Jones for Plastic Sea and Peter Barnes for Breaking Wave.

Ken is a practising artist living in North Wales where he has been working and exhibiting for the past fifteen years. His subject matter is mostly landscape or seascape.
He works in a variety of media the main one being oil paint where he enjoys it’s intensity of colour and mastic like qualities which enable him to apply the paint to the painting surface with brush, knife, fingers, or whatever tool seems appropriate to achieve a desired effect.
He also works in pure watercolour or sometimes adding other media to his watercolours such as pastel, charcoal and crayon on heavy watercolour papers.
I first started to paint with Stockport Art Guild of which I am an honorary member. Since moving to Wales, 20 years ago, I have been inspired by the beauty and diversity of the scenery, both inland and coastal. All though watercolour is my favourite medium I also enjoy using acrylic and pastel.
